A navigational challenge event in aid of wildlife conservation,
organised by the Beds Herts and Cambs Land Rover Club

????????????? 200?

About the event

The Woburn Trek event was inspired by a family trip to the Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire in the Summer of 2005, it was a busy day and I was frustrated by being stuck in a queue of visitors in a very capable 4x4 vehicle on an asphalt road, a frustration that I'm sure you can all relate to.

The seed of inspiration began to form in the back of my head that developed that evening into an idea for a charity event that would appeal to like minded individuals and raise a lot of money for wildlife conservation.

The following morning I had a look at the Woburn Safari park web site and was pleasantly surprised to find a direct contact for the parks CEO, Chris Webster. So, I sent him an e-mail briefly describing my idea, I'm not quite sure what I expected at that point, but a day or two later I got a phone call from Chris inviting me over to the park for a meeting.

A week later I took Chris and Cheryl Williams, the park's marketing director for a drive around their park, expounding my vision of an event. They both liked the idea but could not make a commitment till I could put a proposal together to be authorised by the Duke of Bedford. Personal circumstances got the better of me for the rest of that year but in January 2006 I spent a day with a park ranger by the name of Bob exploring the behind the scenes woodland of the site and put said proposal together with the support of the Beds Herts and Cambs Land Rover Club.

The Event

Woburn Trek is designed to be a non damaging, but wherever possible challenging navigational event that is open to any road legal 4x4 with an enclosed metal cab.

The two day event is run over a weekend and includes various forms of road and byway navigation and off road challenges that include routes within the park's wild animal enclosures and forestry land that is not normally open to the public. Competitors will be required to bring camping equipment for the Saturday overnight stop and will also be allowed to camp on the park on the Friday and Sunday nights. They are also invited to spend the rest of Monday as guests of the park exploring its facilities as regular visitors.

There will be various prizes awarded for good navigation at an end of event dinner on the Sunday evening as well as a special trophy for the team that raises the most sponsorship and a spirit of the event award. On the Monday morning the winning team and the team that raises the most sponsorship will get the opportunity to go on a VIP tour of the park.

To enter the event each team of driver and navigator has to pre-pay an entry fee of £100, which will cover all costs incurred in running the event. To qualify for entry each team also has to raise a minimum of £500 sponsorship for the designated charity, the Woburn Centre for Conservation and Education's (WCCE).

I hope you are as enthusiastic about this event and about wildlife conservation as I am and choose to print off the entry form and sign up for what I intend to be the most unique 4x4 event in the UK.
